Nazi anti-Semitism differs from other forms of anti-Semitism in its biological racism, its totalitarian state ideology, and its industrially organized genocide (the Shoah).<\/p>\n

Nazi anti-Semitism occupied a specific ideological position within Nazism. At the same time, the Nazi system as a whole was based on a form of racial nationalism that targeted numerous groups. It would therefore be an oversimplification to view Nazi racism as limited exclusively to anti-Semitism.<\/p>\n

Rather, Nazi anti-Semitism was intertwined with other enemy stereotypes, such as anti-Americanism, anti-Bolshevism, and the rejection of an ethnically and culturally pluralistic society. In Nazi ideology, \u201cJewishness\u201d also served as a code word for all those political, social, and cultural developments that were constructed as the antithesis of the \u201cv\u00f6lkische Volksgemeinschaft\u201d (ethnic community) they sought to establish.<\/p>\n

Anti-Semitism was thus not merely hostility toward Jews, but also a central ideological concept used to legitimize a racially defined national order and its internal and external boundaries.<\/p>\n

Under Nazi anti-Semitism, being Jewish was no longer understood as a religion, culture, or individual identity, but was racially reinterpreted as a supposedly hereditary, innate trait. Nazi ideology posited an imagined \u201cJewish nature\u201d\u2014an alleged character, a supposed \u201csoul,\u201d or an \u201cessence\u201d\u2014that was said to exist independently of personal behavior, beliefs, or way of life. This was precisely what marked a radical departure from earlier forms of religious anti-Semitism:<\/p>\n

According to this logic of stigmatization, people could no longer \u201cescape\u201d it through conversion or conformity, because the label was considered biological. \u201cAssimilation\u201d was exploited for propaganda purposes through racialization and became a target of ostracism.<\/p>\n

The explanation of antisemitism as an expression of envy toward economic success or social influence fails to recognize the ideological structure of \u201cv\u00f6lkisch\u201d thinking. What was decisive was not the actual social status of individual people, but the racist construction of a deep-seated difference in nature. In anti-Semitic ideology, \u201cJewishness\u201d was declared to be an ascribed inner characteristic that seemingly linked political, cultural, and economic phenomena. The conspiracy narrative about \u201cJewish power\u201d was therefore less an expression of a mere conflict of competition than part of a worldview that explained social complexity through the construction of an alien, supposedly homogeneous collective entity.<\/p>\n

It was precisely the denigration and demarcation from the constructed \u201cother\u201d that formed a central component of v\u00f6lkisch-nationalist racist ideologies. One\u2019s own community was not only described in positive terms but was also stabilized by denigrating other groups as supposedly \u201cforeign.\u201d This racist hubris was based on the notion of the inherent superiority of one\u2019s own group and the justification for organizing the surrounding world hierarchically: as a threat, as an enemy, or as an object of political and economic exploitation.<\/p>\n
